Mother and Son divided, 1995

Son is the dark lead-like piece. It appears extremely heavy, but this is a deception. It is in reality a light hardboard box on a timber frame. The finish is cast encaustic, with a coating of burnished graphite. The Mother piece was not originally intended to be a part of the work as it was the plaster mold Hodway made to cast the lettering. Its form pleased him so much, he shellacked it and exhibited them as a pair, opposite each other. The process gave rise to the title, as the ‘Mother’ had been integral to the genesis of the ‘Son’.
