The Blue Circle Freight, 2021

The Blue Circle Freight is one of Hodway’s first paintings that focusses on using exclusively salvaged paint. The colours seen in this seminal piece were to feature again and again in subsequent works – until they ran out. The format is based on the faded and battered livery on the shipping containers Hodway sees along the river Thames near his studio. A parallel influence were the gaudy colours and patterns of the starships in Chris Foss’ paintings that adorned the covers of Isaac Asimov sci-fi books while Hodway was growing up.  “I always thought that those starships were too clean. I figured that spending decades traversing the galaxy, and being scorched by lift off and reentry would leave more telling traces.”
