The Way Ahead, 2024

£2,500.00

After revisiting Mark Rothko’s paintings, I took a break from cosmologically derived forms, in favour of exploring colour to elicit more emotional and spiritual iterations. The title references the popular phrase “the light at the end of the tunnel” which is commonly used to refer to the impending cessation of hard times, as well as the experiences reported by people close to, and even after clinical death. In this way it is still coherent with the underlying memento mori themes that run through my work.

With this painting, I returned to my familiar salvaged emulsion paints, of which I had acquired an unusual abundance of yellows, oranges and blues from Community Repaint at Southwark Waste and Recycling Center. Most of the time people throw out bright whites and magnolia, so this was a welcome surprise.
