The Monad, 2025

£5,000.00

The term ‘monad’ comes from the Ancient Greek words ‘monas’, meaning unity and ‘monos’, meaning alone. It was originally conceived by the Pythagoreans, to simultaneously denote the first thing to come into existence, the totality of things, and the supreme being, however they used an encircled dot to represent the idea (similar to the painting ‘The Coronation of Ra’). The word monad is used in some schools of cosmic philosophy and cosmogony to refer to the primordial substance from which all other things are derivations of.

In an effort to minimise the negative environmental impact of art production, this piece is composed almost entirely of paint that has been salvaged from post-consumer sources, predominantly municipal waste disposal facilities. In other words, it is made from paint that has been thrown away. By diverting these perfectly viable paints from landfill their future is transformed from harmful to harmonious, and reduces production and consumption of virgin materials.
